April 2010:

Bar Stools with back rest

A customer found some stools online that they liked, but wanted a different size, wood type, and finish.  We are making four of them in oak.

First, we draw up full size plans scaled from the original.

After all the parts are milled the seat blanks are glued up.

Next,  the legs are cut to length.  Compound angles are cut on each end of the legs.

Then mortises are cut into the legs for the support rails, and the angled tenons are cut on the rails.

The seats are rough shaped on the bandsaw, before work begins on the backrest.

After all the seats are rough shaped, its time to shape all the parts for the back rest.

Once all the parts are shaped its time for scraping and sanding to smooth all the parts before the glue up.

Next the seats are attached using 3/4” wedged tenons. All the tenons on the legs are pinned using 1/4” pins for extra strength .

After all the parts are together a final sanding takes place before finishing begins. The customer chose a light golden yellow color for these stools that will keep the natural look of the wood.

After the stain was applied we applied polyurethane for the finish for extra protection on a heavily used item such as a bar stool.  A final rub down of the finish once it has cured completely and these stools are ready for delivery.
